The World Dodgeball Federation is proud to highlight the continued work of the Peace for Development Refugees Initiative (PDRI) during recent International Day of Sport for Development and Peace activities held at Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya.
The activities formed part of the global “We Choose Peace” campaign and brought together refugees and members of the host community through sport, dialogue, cultural exchange, and community engagement initiatives designed to promote peace, inclusion, and social cohesion.
Supported by the WDBF as part of its broader Sport for Refugees initiatives, the event featured dodgeball alongside a variety of additional sport and community activities including Baseball5 demonstrations, football, yoga, acrobatics, dance, and youth engagement programming.
In its public messaging surrounding the event, PDRI emphasized a simple but powerful message:
“Peace, not violence. Peace, not war. Peace is the only way to protect humanity.”
The organization also highlighted how sport can help unite communities across cultural and national differences, particularly within refugee settings where opportunities for positive interaction, teamwork, and shared experiences are critically important.
The WDBF has worked with PDRI over several years to help introduce and expand dodgeball programming within Kakuma Refugee Camp. Previous collaboration has included online coaching workshops, equipment support, youth engagement activities, and community peacebuilding initiatives connected to the federation’s ongoing work with UNHCR and Sport for Refugees partners.
For the WDBF, initiatives such as these demonstrate the unique ability of sport to create safe and inclusive environments where young people can build confidence, friendships, leadership skills, and hope for the future. Dodgeball’s accessibility, low equipment requirements, and emphasis on teamwork continue to make it an effective platform for community engagement in a wide range of environments around the world.
The federation also recognizes the leadership of local organizations such as PDRI, whose work continues to create meaningful opportunities for refugees and host communities alike through sport, education, peacebuilding, and youth empowerment.
As the WDBF continues to expand its global Sport for Refugees initiatives, the federation remains committed to working alongside community organizations, international partners, and local leaders to ensure that sport can continue serving as a tool for inclusion, peace, and positive social impact.
